Betty Mbitjana was born circa 1954 in the Utopia region of central Australia and comes from a family of artists.
She is the daughter of renowned artist Minne Pwerle and sister of artist Barbara Weir.
Mbitjana paints patterns based on footprints in the sand created during ceremonial dances, designs that are typically painted on women’s bodies.
Her images are largely homages to her ancestors and the traditions of her tribe.
